Marvelous

Because life just amazes me everyday (:

This morning, I was taking my grandpa for a walk in the NUH hospital gardens. And suddenly, he looked up, and saw these two blue kingfishers. I have no idea what they were doing there, but the way they just shimmered in the early morning light pleased my grandpa to no end.

It has been a long time since he was happy like that.

Then my grandpa told me about how they got their blue capes. Long ago, the kingfishers were the envoys from the spirit of the sky, messengers to the spirit of water. They were so charming, the spirit of water asked them to stay a while. Then suddenly, a demon came, threatening to fill in the lake the water spirit lived in.

The kingfishers dived onto the demon, attacking it with their beaks. They fought with such ferocity, the demon pulled out all of their back feathers in an attempt to protect itself.

After the demon had fled, the kingfishers slumped to the ground, in pain and almost bare of feathers.

The water spirit felt their pain, and used it as a thread to weave a cape of water, to cloak the kingfishers, for them to wear as a badge of honour.Henceforth, they were named the protector of water bodies, darting around with their shimmering capes of blue, sharing the water's bounty, protecting the water spirit forevermore.

(:

Bow down to the humble kingfisher; for it symbolises peace, happiness, and a bountiful catch.
